If you think I am doing homiletical hijinx you should read this article about a church service in Germany that was entirely generated by Chat GPT! While I am having fun using Chat GPT for my own Homiletical Hijinx I do not think we will use it to replace the preacher at my church next time I am out of town! Nothing replaces the genuine human emotion and presence of a real human preacher.
This week’s sermon was for Father’s Day 2023 (6.18.23). I asked Chat GPT:
Me: Please give me a sermon. The sermon is for Father’s Day 2023 and is to be based on Proverbs 4:1-9.
The answer was disappointing for me given my last conversation with it. Last time I asked for narrativity in my sermon and to stop using three points…. Well the tired old sermon cliche lives on here! It gave me three points yet again.
There is only one part I think is worth sharing. It gave this as the “illustration” under it’s second heading:
Imagine a traveler on a grand adventure, eager to explore the world’s wonders and uncover hidden treasures. In a similar way, our pursuit of wisdom should be characterized by a sense of wonder, curiosity, and a thirst for knowledge. Just as a traveler embraces new experiences and grows from them, so too should we seek wisdom with open hearts and minds.
I think that is half-way decent! I like this. This may just play a part in how I end up giving the final version of my sermon. See for yourself. Here is the sermon I wrote and preached.
Happy Father’s Day 2023 by the way!
